International workshop “Implementing the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the ICH”

The International workshop “Implementing the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage at National Level” organized by the Regional ICH Center in Sofia, along with the Development Centre “Democracy through Culture” (Kyiv), Department of Culture, National Minorities and Religions of the Dnipropetrovsk region State Administration and the CSO “WOMEN Plus” (Dnipro) was held in the city of Dnipro, 5-9 February 2018.

Among participants of this 5-day training carried out by the international ICH experts, Anita Vaivade and Saša Srećković, were representatives of various regions (oblasts) of Ukraine: Sumska, Kyivska, Odeska, Zaporizka, Cherkaska, Poltavska, Luhanska, and Dnipropetrovska.

The core objective of the training was the network shaping of the national ICH experts, practitioners and promotors in Ukraine. Participants discussed questions concerning the compilation of ICH inventories on local and regional level, the role of bearers and communities in Convention 2003 implementation, inventories building, ICH research. Representatives of local communities from Dnipropetrovska oblast, which have ICH inscribed into UNESCO Lists, shared their experience in preparing nomination files and realizing safeguarding measures on regional level.

Anita Vaivade (Latvia) is a UNESCO ICH global facilitator, lawyer by training, one of the developers of the Law of Latvian Republic on ICH Safeguarding. Saša Srećković is a UNESCO ICH global facilitator, leading ICH expert of Serbia. By the end of the workshop, A. Vaivade and S. Srećković visited the village of Petrykivka where could acquaint with educational programmes on Petrykivka painting, take part in master class, visited local museum and meet with bearers of ICH inscribed into the UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
