ICH: programs for raising awareness

Parliament hearings “Situation, problems and perspectives of cultural heritage protection in Ukraine”, initiated by the Parliament Committee on Culture and Religions have been carried out in the Verkhovna Rada Hall in Kyiv, on April 18, 2018. Firstly, the special section dedicated to the intangible cultural heritage, has been presented at such hearings. Natalia Pershyna, chief of Department for Culture, Nationalities and Religions of the State Administration of Dnipropetrovska oblast from which 2 ICH elements presenting Ukraine are inscribed into UNESCO lists, has made report. Among other issues, she highlighted the educational aspect retelling about the methodology of pre-school education developed in 2013 by a group of authors jointly with a creative staff of Petrykivka preschool educational establishment #1 for children between 2 and 6 years, and about a text-book by Tetiana Harkava, Ukrainian artist, schoolmaster, honored folk artist. Folk master of Petrykivka painting.

According to the Article 14 “Education, awareness-raising and capacity-building” of the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, (1)  the State Party “ensure recognition of, respect for, and enhancement of the intangible cultural heritage in society, in particular through educational… programmes, aimed at the general public, in particular young people”. The raising of awareness and youth involvement are realized within the frames of general educational programmes, educational programmes for preschool children and students. Such methodologies are adapted to local conditions and composed on the basis of knowledge about local ICH.
